Description
In the quilting world, a standard “layer cake” contains 42 10″x10″ precut squares of fabric. They are coordinated along a specific designer’s collection or color pallette, and are helpful for anyone looking to get a quick start on a quilt or other sewing project without having to choose colors and/or buy a large amount of fabric.
And while factory-made fabric layer cakes can be very beautiful and perfectly coordinated, you might be seeking something a bit more unique and sustainable! That’s where my UpCakes come in! I gather the fabric for my UpCakes from a variety of sources, including vintage, second-hand, old stock, scrap, and upcycled textiles. This guarantees a unique and unexpected look to whatever project you’re working on!
GREAT FOR:
- Small quilts (lap-size / baby / wall hanging)
- Larger quilts (with supplemental fabric)
- Small sewing projects
- Applique and fabric collage
- Any craft requiring small pieces or a variety of fabric
WHAT TYPE OF FABRIC?
UpCakes are mostly 100% quilter’s cotton, but they’ll include some other varieties of fabric, including shirting cotton, homespun, linen, lightweight canvas, plus the occasional upcycled textile such as tea towels, napkins, tablecloths and more. I do NOT include fabrics like jersey, flannel, decor/drapery, fleece, silk, or other types that would be overly challenging to incorporate in a quilt made from the UpCake. I hope to strike a balance between variety and cohesion.
NOTE: Though I make an effort to include only natural fibers, there may be a couple of vintage fabrics included that have unknown fiber content and could contain a percentage of synthetic materials like polyester.
THINGS TO KNOW:
- Because it’s just me and my trusty rotary blade cutting these squares, there will be slight variances in measurements. It is important that you always MEASURE for your projects!
- On a similar note, as these are cut by hand with a rotary blade, some fraying on the edges will be present (the squares are not cut with pinking scissors).
- All my fabric is ironed, sometimes using a Faultless Magic spray, to help smooth out creases and ensure the most precise cuts possible.
- Most of the fabric in my UpCakes comes unwashed, but some vintage and upcycled sources will have been laundered in the past.
- Unlike factory-made layer cakes, these bundles contain a variety of fabrics that may vary in hand feel, softness and texture. (I see this as a good thing!)
Your UpCake will also come with a list of suggested patterns and resources for project ideas!
